How the weather and business strategy is linked

Depending on your circumstances, this week has either been magical or a nightmare. For myself and our family it has been magic. Our kids never really got a chance to experience snow, having spent most of their life on the south coast. However, this week was a week for your big coat! If nothing else, the frozen milk on the doorstep told us this 🥛

If I did the same thing as last year I wouldn’t have worn my big coat, which would have been a mistake. I don’t feel this differs from organisations’ mistakes in business strategy. Simply doing the same as you did last year in a landscape that is constantly changing isn’t a good strategy. Don’t be the next Blockbuster Video!

Were we prepared? Yes. The snow was forecast, and unlike other years, it wasn’t isolated but a weather front that looked like it would cover a significant area. We ventured into the hills over the weekend and found a superb sledging hill.

For me this isn’t dissimilar to the marketplace – our kids (the audience) and the weather (market conditions) were aligned! So we took our opportunity, got up early, and travelled to our chosen spot. We enjoyed at least an hour of sledging before the masses descended. We were first on the scene and rode the trend in a less crowded market.

I can’t remember the last time I went sledging, but it was brilliant. Such a simple thing when you dissect it;

🎿 Wrap up warm

🎿 Find a good hill

🎿 Get to the top

🎿 Sit on the sledge, and off you go…

And business strategy should, in essence, be the same. Simple. Don’t make it overly complex or lose momentum. A slow strategy will mean you may have missed the boat by the time you’re ready to make a decision.

During our adventure,we also used feedback loops. Starting halfway down the hill was still fun, but the ride didn’t feel long enough. Too high up and the sledge was challenging to control. So, over time, we found the perfect sledging line and height. All by reacting to the information we were getting through trial and error.

There is a heap of information about how to create a business strategy. Selecting a method you are comfortable with is a great place to start. Starting is often the most challenging thing, but you can’t edit a blank page.
