Why is Self Awareness so important and how can it Drive High Performance?

I’ve always been fascinated by personal development and this seems to accelerate the older I get. I’m sure you’ve done DISC profiling, Myers Briggs 16 personality test, skill assessments, psychometric testing and more.

Whilst these offer you value and help you to better understand you, I would class these profiling tools the ‘visible’ end of what and how people operate. However, what is not visible is where your natural proclivities lie. And in here lies the magic of finding where people can make the most impact.

With the teams and individuals that I’ve been working with over the last few years I’ve been using The GC Index. You can read more about it here https://www.thegcindex.com/ but here is a synopsis of some learning that I’ve discovered that has created high performance for leaders and teams.

I recently ran a workshop for local business leaders at Emirates Old Trafford. This was a business club for leaders and entrepreneurs and you can watch the full session here.

1. Align Roles with Energy for Impact

Understanding the unique energy for impact of each team member is key to success. The GC Index identifies five proclivities: Play Maker, Game Changer, Strategist, Implementer, and Polisher. Each individual has a distinct profile indicating how to contribute most effectively.

Insight: As leaders, you should ensure that roles and responsibilities align with the energy preferences of team members. For instance, a Play Maker thrives in collaborative environments, while a Game Changer excels in creative and innovative settings. By aligning roles with these proclivities, teams can optimise their collective performance and drive better outcomes.

2. Foster a Culture of Continuous Improvement

High performance is not a one-time achievement but a continuous journey. The Polisher proclivity embodies the philosophy of continuous improvement, focusing on excellence and learning.

Insight: If you cultivate an environment where feedback is encouraged, and learning from experiences is valued, you can change the pace of change You can achieve this through regular reviews, open discussions about performance, and celebrating both successes and lessons learned. This will enhance the overall performance.

3. Leverage The Complementarity

The GC Index highlights the complementarity between different proclivities. For example, a Strategist can provide direction and clarity, while an Implementer can translate that strategy into actionable plans.

Insight: We should all encourage collaboration among team members with different proclivities. By recognising and leveraging the strengths of each proclivity, teams can create a balanced approach to problem-solving and decision-making. This collaborative effort can lead to innovative solutions and improved performance.

Conclusion

Driving high performance requires a deep understanding of the energy for impact within individuals and teams. Leaders can create an environment where teams thrive by aligning roles with individual proclivities, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, and leveraging the complementarity of different strengths. Embracing these insights can lead to enhanced performance, greater engagement, and, ultimately, organisational success.

GC Index Score

What does this say about me? Well, the Play Maker (10) means I’ll excel in getting the best from others and fostering collaboration within teams. An ability to build relationships and facilitate teamwork will be a significant asset in situations/roles I undertake.

The scores for Game Changer (6) and Strategist (6) indicate that I have a balanced energy for both generating creative ideas and seeing patterns or trends, allowing me to evaluate possibilities while also bringing focus and direction to my work. This combination can help me navigate complex situations and drive innovation.

Overall, my profile indicates a strong potential for leadership, particularly in roles that require teamwork, creativity, and a commitment to quality (Polisher 7). The interplay between these proclivities can help me make a significant impact.
